Bush Evicted

Posted Mar 30 2006

Public Housing ‘One Strike Eviction’ policy sends President Bush packing. This is a lesson I used to illustrate the use of satire as a form of social commentary via humor. The first page was the prereading handout I gave the students and under that is the article itself. Page two is the questions we used. While I acknowledge that many of the answers to the questions are painfully obvious, their purpose is to ensure that the students actually read the article. That is quite an accomplishment for many of the students I work with.

7. Write at least one paragraph (at least five sentences) saying how you felt about this article. Some things to think about: Are there any laws or rules that you feel unfairly affect you? The article is obviously commenting on the fact that politicians and lawmakers make laws believing that they won’t affect them. Do you think that this is part of a pattern of hypocrisy or was it an understandable oversight? (10 pts)
