Boogaloo: The Quintessence of American Popular Music

I haven't read this book, but skimming through it, Kempton gives a critical analysis of African-American popular music, from its musical sensibilities to the business side of things. The usuals are here: Motown, James Brown, Sam Cook, etc. More contemporary figures include KRS-One, Tupac, Dr. Dre, and George Clinton. It's a dense read, but full of good information.
