Set in Oakland, CA in 1989, this book revolves around Maceo Redfield, a former star high school athlete, who struggles to maintain the straight and narrow path and not fall to the temptations of the streets. This is easier said than done since some of his closest friends are less than savory types. However, Tramble does a great job of creating multi-dimensional characters. The plot is layered and ends with a surprising twist. Although it's been some time since I read this, I remember that I could not put it down and couldn't wait to read the follow up book. Bay area residents will appreciate Tramble's attention to detail, but anyone interested in drama and suspense can appreciate this quick read. My high school students who've read this book really liked it as well. I usually run from "urban fiction" but Tramble hit a homerun with
Dying Ground.
