Without a doubt, Beatty is one of the premiere contemporary wordsmiths. This work of fiction has hip-hop roots but creatively and eloquently critiques society on issues ranging from class to education as the main character moves from the sunny beaches of Santa Monica, CA to the inner city strife of Los Angeles, to an Ivy League college on the East Coast. A witty, yet serious book that is worth reading more than once. This book is so heavily-layered that you'll probably have to read it more than once to catch all of the nuances.
