Music : Rooted in hip hop, but down to spin anything funky. From techno, to ghetto tech, to soul, to dancehall, everything is game. Education : Ideas and resources for using hip hop and popular culture to empower young people, as well as discuss issues related to social justice and diversity. Writings: Besides features and reviews on identity and urban pop culture, read the online journal of a twenty-something year old wandering the world in search of his lost self.

However, I'm also updating the "Taiwan page," so be sure to check it out!

Teacher reflects on Oakland MC

Anthony “Supreme Sketch” Ragland wasn’t exactly one of those students who screamed potential to me. At the time I was a teacher at a new charter high school in east Oakland and my classroom, next to a church auditorium, also served as a main hallway so discipline was a constant issue, including a young Anthony casually strolling through my class on his cell phone.

Avatar retreads tired racial stereotypes

As with most futures not envisioned by people of color, the human population will still be predominately White. Beyond a few tokens, the rest of us still show up as the “others.”

Living History: Allensworth, CA

Allensworth was founded by African Americans at the turn of the 20th Century. Although it is not currently a functional town it’s a state park and has several events each year to keep its legacy alive. For this year’s annual commemoration Oakland Unity High School and Our Family Circle teamed up to make the four-hour drive. Three generations of Oaklanders joined the celebration, along with yours truly.

Latinos in Taiwan Pt. 3: Chicano hip hop scene

It’s no secret that people in Asia are fascinated by hip hop, with countries such as Japan cultivating a massive scene including sub-genres such as Chicano rap. Although Taiwan’s scene is not as developed, it’s steadily growing and makes huge strides every time I visit. As far as I can tell, there’s relatively little that’s been written about this scene so I wanted to explore a little bit. But to properly address this issue, I need to set up some personal context.

Latinos in Taiwan Pt. 2: El Gallo Restaurant and Brass Monkey Salsa Night

This may be the shorter of my three postings on this topic as my conversations with Isa, one of the owners of the El Gallo restaurant, and Jorge, the founder of Latinos Taiwan, were super short. However, in my effort to learn more about the Latino community in Taiwan, every little bit of information counted! During my brief visit I wasn’t focused primarily on finding out everything Latino so I took whatever I could get.
