California Living-May 2010

Posted May 25 2010

A few events from the past month, including The Allensworth Old Time Jubilee, The Jamaican Jerk Cook Off in Oakland, The Malcolm X Jazz Festival, and Cinco de Mayo in Sonoma. Allensworth was founded by African Americans nearly 100 years ago and has great historical significance, although it’s mainly composed of empty buildings now. The Jerk Cook Off was a fundraiser for the My Yute youth soccer camp. The Malcolm X Jazz Festival is an annual Oakland institution, is one of the best music festivals around, and it’s free! I only caught the last hour or so, but saw great performances by The Rara Tou Limen Haitian Dance Company and Henry Clement’s Gumbo Band. Finally, took a spontaneous trip up to Sonoma with the s.o. Good times all around!
