DJ Project-Oakland, CA

May 6 2005 - In a nutshell, students learn how to make their own tracks and learn about the music business. Beyond the learning process, everyone is part of a compilation CD that they helped create. Additionally, they perform, walk away with press kits, participate in field trips and learn from special guests. They have access to a full recording studio, including professional software such as Pro Tools. This program has been running for five years in San Francisco, CA and our site, Unity High in Oakland, was one of the first satellites. We partnered up with Raperation Records in downtown Oakland, during which time our respective sites collaborated on tracks via online file sharing. Back at Unity, we had a small core group of high school students. Our current crew is Tone, Karla, Evelyn, Roman, and Ana. The day to day operations at this site are co-lead by yours truly and David Castillo, another Unity High teacher known as DJ Changó in his nightlife! This gallery captures our photo shoot, which was done by Brazilian filmmaker and photographer Ana Homonnay. Her photos are the ones not showing the back of her head! For more info: The DJ Project
