Malcolm X Jazz Festival 2008, Roller Derby, and more!

Posted May 20 2008

Despite almost getting run over by a cop car, in the words of Ice Cube, today was a good day. I got my day started by attending an annual lunch by The Khadafy Foundation, which works to end youth violence in the Bay. While the reasons it exists aren't positive, it's great to see organizations like this exist to help address the problem. I also had a chance to catch up with some folks from S.A.V.O.Y. and the Hip Hop Congress. After that, I stopped by the Malcolm X Jazz Festival in Oakland. I had a great time and got to reconnect with different folks. Others I saw around included DJ Fuze, DJ Phatrick, Kiwi, K.E.V., Ambessa The Articulate, Ryan Nicole, Davey D, and Oakland School Board member Greg Hodge. Besides the pics below, I also posted a video clip of Kiwi and one of Goapele. Later that night I experienced my first ever roller derby bout, featuring the San Francisco She-Devils and the Richmond Wrecking Belles. The experience is a whole other essay in itself, but an all-around good time! Later, I caught my boy Baby Daddy spinning at the Oasis. Finally, I included some pics of work being done on a new mural at my school. So yeah, it was an exhausting, but good day. I don't know how many of these I can handle though. ; )

I don't even understand what's going on in that paragraph of yours. It's kind of confusing because it contradicted itself at least twice within the first few sentences. Well, in my case, it appears that way. Anywho, on a random note, seems like a lot of activity was occurring in the photos shown here. There are certainly a lot of murals. I recognize the last three pictures because that mural's featured in front of Mr. Barragon's class and such.

Hey Mr.Z it seemed that you had a hard and interesting day. It sound scared that you were about to get run over by a police car.But it was interesting of all the things you did in the same day. It seemed that you had a lot fun and that. By looking at th e pictures that you have taken it seems that they are really interesting pictures and that it the paintings it shows a lot of hard work on it. It seems really fun as the one that I had went on Mr.Treacy exhibition. Everything on that day was fun and really interesting that many people from different cultures are interesting in painting. Because doing a painting like that it takes time and effort to be able to do a really good paint. But it was good that you got to see friends from you in back in the day.

Wow, you must have had a wild day. Youth relief, Luv U longtime and spray paint probably messed up your head Mr.Z, you said good day more than a Korean shop owner. But I would kill for a day with that much craziness and excitement, the pictures you took have been stamped in my brain. The angles are excellent I really felt the feel of the events happening. Especially The first event for youth violence, with the murals, dancing and singing. It captured the essence of an event that went according to plan and reached their goals. Now those ladies at the roller derby scare the crap out of me, like army sergeant scared! And one more thing could you please tell me about these events, they're so interesting!

Whooaa..Mr yOu had a good day, it looks like you didnt get bored. I think that the Malcom X event is a great way to interact with old friends, and meet new people as well. people can go to those type of events and expresse themselves in poems, or art, or even in music.

How many places can you go to in a day?! Anyway, there was some very nice artwork at the lunch. That new mural at school at school is also further proof of the connections available at Unity. I have to say I am no scholar when it comes to music so I won't lie and say that I could do more than recognize the names you put out there. However that does not mean I am not interested so let me know some essentials to check out and I will do some research on my part. A roller derby bout? is that a fight or a race (seriously I don't know) This looks like a pretty interesting thing to go to. Let me know when there are more events like those you went to on that day, there is no travel agent in the world that could find something more interesting than that.

After reading this article it was interesting to see that you talked about what you did and were you went. I would of also wanted to read what your experience was and what was that happened while the Malcolm X Jazz Festival was happening. You could have also given details on how it was that you felt about participating in this festival. This article was also a bit confusing because you only talked about who you reconnected with but did not give concrete details. Even though you have a lot of picture and those pictures show a lot of what was going on it would have also been interesting if you gave an explanation below each picture to give us an idea of what exactly was going on at that time.

I agree with lucia. The description are to short. I would like to hear more about the Roller Derby and the Malcolm X jazz festival. Do the anounce it on public places? is it private? Was the Malcolm X jazz festival dedicated to Malcolm X? Or is it just a name for the festival, becuase what I see in the pictures it seems like it was for pop-culture.
