Michigan-April 2010

Posted Apr 27 2010

I recently spent a few days back in Michigan, rotating between metro Detroit, Saginaw, Bay City, Reese, and even a quick excursion to Windsor, Canada. Besides catching up with close family and friends I made it a point to visit and revisit places I had never appreciated or experienced when I was younger. Among my stops were The Arab American Museum and The Henry Ford Museum. However, I also can never get over the amount of abandoned buildings in southeast Michigan and the Midwest in general. The area already gets enough bad press but it's no secret that the area has seen better days, although Michigan has much more to offer than tales of doom and gloom. It remains one of my favorite places.

In many ways my eye kept being drawn back to one of these structures, more so than world-class museums such as the Detroit Institute of Art. As a minor history buff I found myself in reflection and wonderment, especially when contrasting the urban and rural scenes of this visit. Michigan's an amazing place for those interested in American history and cross-cultural pollination (did I just say that?). These pictures don't even scratch the surface.
