Minutemen and War Protest-Northern California

Posted Mar 29 2006

Nov 2 2005 - I'm posting these way late, but better late than never! The Bay area is known for its leftist activism and it seems as if there's a protest or rally nearly every day. I checked out an anti-Minute Man march up in Sacramento (OK, so it's not part of the Bay Area) and an anti-War protest in San Francisco. While my political views favored the protestors, I always desire insight to all perspectives and can't stand the spinning and propoganda of either side. While protests are hardly the place for discussion, I was able to have civilized discussion with some Minute Men supporters. In spite of their rhetoric, the discussions and interaction actually strengthened my disagreement with them. For the record, I did quite a bit of research, on this issue before and after the protest. In terms of the war protest, I'm against the war, but I find both sides of the this issue to be dominated by extremist views. My interpretation falls in the middle and I've rarely found both sides willing to actually talk and listen to one another. I'll spare you my political opinions, but in regards to the youth covering their faces, they weren't doing anything illegal. While it's easy to group all of the young people masking their identities as radical extremists, the ones that I know who were a part of the protest merely covered their faces as the police were documenting everything. These particular youth simply didn't want to be captured on film. While they were vocal about their views, they didn't evey jay walk! Note: the photos of the cops on horseback were taken by a friend.
