National Hip Hop Political Convention - Newark, NJ
Posted Mar 29 2006
Jun 18 2004 - The NHHPC was organized as an effort to politically mobilize “the hip hop generation” in a cohesive manner. Panelists and presenters included journalists, activists, educators, and students such as author Bakari Kitwana, hip hop commentator Davey D, Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, jazz legend and educator Dr. Donald Byrd, the Reverend Calvin Butts, journalist dream Hampton, MC Lyte, Crazy Legs, Wyclef Jean, Kurtis Blow, and Dip Set’s Jimi Jones. Topics covered included criminal justice, education, global issues, and workshops devoted to community organization and financial planning. Of course, performances were in abundance. It’ll be interesting to see the fruits of these efforts. After leaving Newark, I spent some time in New York, chillin’in Washington Park and the Village, looking for my Dominican wife. Alas, no luck… Big thanks to Alex and Dorian for the hospitality, as well as Lindsey, Hector, and the rest of the San Jose crew. Those last three images are of some dude in Washington Square Park jumping over folks for money. The build up was quite entertaining.
