On the hip-hop scene, Chicano’s (光頭) Beat Square returns tomorrow afternoon to Taipei Cinema Park in Ximending (西門町).

“The idea was to bring hip-hop and deejaying back to the streets, just like what Kool Herc did when he first started,” Chicano said. “Also I’d like to cater for those DJs who are still spinning vinyl, so every DJ we have here plays records only.”

The guest DJ this weekend is Domingo Yu (Daniel Zarazua), a veteran DJ (and high school teacher and vice principal) from the US. Domingo Yu knew of Chicano long before they met in person. “Although I was born in Taiwan, I spent most of my life in the US. I always kept an eye on Taiwan’s hip-hop scene and Chicano was legendary to me. It took about three visits [over 10 years] before I finally got to meet him so it’s been great that we’ve been able to collaborate,” Yu says.

Having deejayed for almost 20 years and shared billings with big names like Derrick May, Eminem and Xzibit, Domingo Yu is a respected and versatile DJ who enjoys many different kinds of music. “I’m heavily influenced by New York, Detroit and LA, so this comes out in how I play. It’ll be a mixture of old school hip hop, dancehall, R ’n’ B and bass, with a healthy Latin influence … Bring an open mind and as we say in Detroit, ‘Leave the attitudes and bring yo’ dancing shoes!’” For more about Domingo Yu, visit www.domingoyu.com.

* Tomorrow from 3pm to 5pm at Taipei Cinema Park (台北電影公園), 19 Kangding Rd, Taipei City (台北市康定路19號). Admission is free.
