D-12: The Mix CD

Posted Mar 13 2006

Review of 2003 mix CD by Detroit hip-hop group, D-12.

In spite of their success these past years, the members of D-12 still keep themselves visible in the streets and prove that they haven't forgotten their roots. On this near-exclusive release, you'd never think that this CD came from one of the top-selling hip hop groups. The artwork is pixilated like one of my own mix CDs (smile) and the cover didn't even fit in the case. Of course, this griminess is part of D-12's appeal. Like their hometown of Detroit, ain't nothing fake here. But unlike the D, is there anything uplifting about their music? Not really. We get the same demented lyrics about drugs, robbing fools, underage sex, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

There are some new tracks and lots of freestyles over 50 Cent's "In Da Club" and instrumentals from hits by other artists including Scarface and Redman. Bizarre sounds funny doing his version of Missy's "Work It" and there are plenty of choice words for rivals Benzino, Royce The Five Nine, and Murder Inc., including Ashanti. While I have to admit that I'm intrigued by beefs, I can't say that this CD exactly piqued my interest in the next official release. There's way too much testosterone for me and you can only hear b*tch, f*gg*t, and h* so much. There's always room for sh*t talking but these limited topics dragged on. A definite positive was the number of Detroit references, including street names, up and coming artists such as Miz Corona, and Detroit favorites such as Goon Sqwad and DMW. Noticably absent was Eminem, who's still the strongest MC out of the group, and there are no appearances by established cronies such as Xzibit or Obie Trice. There is, however, someone doing a fake Arab accent, remaking Ludacris' "Area Codes" into a stereotypical song called "Liquor Stores." But there are no surprises here. If you take them seriously, there's plenty to be offended by. If you don't, D-12 hasn't changed much since their album and you'll enjoy yourself. I can't say that I've become a fan just yet...
