Detroit artists break, scratch, and dent stereotypes with free show

Posted Mar 13 2006

Detroit youth use hip hop to offset stereotypes. This article appeared in the June 2000 issue of Mi Gente.

Watching how hard the group prepares for the vent, it is evident they sincerely care about their community. They have already put in countless hours of work, yet they receive no monetary compensation. Even young people not affiliated with the youth group have volunteered, helping to paint the mural and getting involved with the planning. While the project has yet to happen, the group has already gone a long way towards demolishing negative stereotypes about their city, their culture, and their generation.

Come check out the show and unveiling of the mural on Sunday, June 25th. The show will run from 2 pm – 8 pm and will feature performances by EP: The Energy Provider, Ste. Anne’s own Nonstop Breakdancing Crew, DJ Chino of Innovative Jocks and urban Slang Records, DJ Nick Fury, Young Guns, and Poor Man’s Orchestra. Free giveaways will be provided by Sony Music, Def Jam Records, and AsianAvenue.com. The free concert will take place at the corner of Ste. Anne’s and Vernor in Detroit. Lowrider cars and bikes will also be on display. For more information, call Victor Villalobos at (313) 958-8695.
