Review of New Rising Sun Entertainment's hip-hop showcase. (July 5, 1999)

With all the success of Royce The Five Nine, Eminem, Cha Cha and several others, Detroit has been hailed as hip hop's next hot spot. But while these artists are now based out of state, their hometown keeps busy, building its foundation as a mecca for hip-hop performers and fans alike. This past weekend was highlighted by New Rising Sun Entertainment's Motor City Hip-Hop Revue at Alvin's; a follow-up to a show held at Motor a few months back that featured special guest host MC Breed. Like its predecessor, this show's lineup was filled with a host of southeast Michigan talent, including Ypsilanti's Infamous PMC, down river's Sevant, and Detroit's 5 Ela, Pimpette and DJ Chino. Even Motski of the pioneering group Detroit's Most Wanted was in the house and dropped a couple of tracks. But although all of these artists put on strong performances, one the strongest draws for the night was the show's hosts, the legendary Last Poets. Mixing humorous wit with political commentary, "the godfathers of rap" even performed some spoken word pieces. ItAs a rare event that can pull together the old-school with the new-school but the Hip-Hop Revue did precisely that. The strong line up of young performers combined with the Last Poets drew a diverse crowd, ranging from college kids to middle-aged community activists. Considering the amount of exposure that these event provided for up-and-coming artists, let's keep our fingers crossed for a Motor City Hip-Hop Revue Part Three.
