Submerge on the Move

You best believe that the relative silence of Detroit-based distributor Submerge over the past few months hasn’t been due to lack of activity. Since last summer, the top distributor of Detroit house and techno music has been busy making the move from its longtime digs at 2030 Grand River to its new 3000 E. Grand Blvd. Location. For Submerge founder Mike Banks, the move seemed inevitable.
“Me and (Submerge owner) Christa Robinson had this idea to make the move for awhile,” he explains. “When the opportunity came up, we took it.” The new building offers room for Submerge to expand its operations. Plans include office space, rooms for electronic music lectures and conferences, areas for art displays, a space for an Internet radio broadcast and, of course, a record store stocking rare and unreleased tracks. Banks is especially excited about a room dedicated to Detroit artists who’ve made significant contributions to electronic music. When pressed about the criteria for selection, Banks simply said, “if you didn’t make a record that rocked the D, don’t expect to see your record on that wall.”
In spite of the move, the spirit of Submerge has not been lost. Banks and Robinson remained committed to the people of Detroit, and denizens from the neighborhood have labored tirelessly to ready the building. “The building has been put together with pride by criminals, dope fiends and assorted misfits,” Banks jokes. The target date for the completion of the building and new website is June 1. “Things have been hectic with the move Banks explains, “so we ask our fans to be patient.”
